Passear pela marginal de São Tomé é um passeio agradável e tornou-se um hábito enquanto estivemos nesta cidade. Ao entardecer a luz é magnífica e facilmente perdemos noção do tempo enquanto contemplamos o oceano, as árvores e as histórias que se cruzam connosco.

Num desses passeios conheci um homem, possivelmente na casa dos seus trinta, que estava a vender polvos à beira da estrada. Sorridente, aproximei-me e perguntei-lhe se podia tirar uma fotografia. Ele consentiu. Ficámos a conversar algum tempo, recordo-me de lhe perguntar o nome — o qual não anotei e infelizmente esqueci — e de falarmos um pouco sobre a sua rotina. Contou-me que todos os dias se levantava perto das cinco da manhã para ir apanhar polvos, que transportava num balde até à marginal com o objectivo de os tentar vender durante o dia. Digo tentar porque, pelo que percebi, muitas vezes não conseguia vender muitos. Um pouco mais de conversa e um carro parou junto de nós, comprando-lhe todos os polvos que tinha… foi incrível ver e partilhar a sua alegria!

Encantado, disse-me que eu lhe tinha dado sorte. Eu sorri e senti-me satisfeito por ter podido partilhar com este homem um momento de felicidade genuína. Despedi-me e continuei o meu passeio pela marginal, em busca de novas caras e novas histórias. Para mim, são estes os momentos que marcam cada viagem e que nos mudam…

The octopuses seller (title)

Walking by São Tomé‘s riverside is a nice walk and had become a habit while we were in this city. At dusk the light is magnificent and we easily lose track of time as we enjoy the ocean, the trees and the stories that cross our paths.

On one of these walks I met a man, possibly in his thirties, he was selling octopuses on the side of the road. Smiling, I approached him and asked if I could take his photograph. He agreed. We talked for a while, I remember asking him his name — which I did not write down and sadly have forgotten — and we also chat a bit about his routine. He told me that every day he would wake up around five in the morning to go catch octopuses, and then carry them in a bucket to the place he now was, along the road, trying to sell them during the day. I say try because, as I understood, often he could not sell many. After a little more chatting a car stopped next to us wanting to buy all the octopuses he had… it was amazing to see and share his joy!

Delighted, he told me that I had given him luck. I smiled and felt pleased to have been able to share with this man a moment of genuine happiness. I said goodbye and continued my walk by the riverside, looking for new faces and new stories. For me, these are the moments that mark each trip and that change us …
